Derek Hanlan – Tax Director

Derek joined Mitchells Roberton in April 2026 as Tax Director, bringing more than 25 years’ experience advising high-net-worth individuals, families and entrepreneurial clients on complex tax matters. Derek’s career history includes positions within Big 4 accounting firms and business management consultants. A law graduate of the University of Glasgow and member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT), he also serves on its Scottish Technical Sub-Committee, contributing to the development of tax policy and guidance.

Derek will lead and grow our tax services within our established private client team, advising on areas including inheritance tax, capital gains tax, income tax and planning considerations around second homes and pensions and with a focus on building and expanding our offering in response to growing client demand.

In his spare time Derek plays squash, and is a Committee member at his local club. He supports his children in their sporting activities, and when not standing at a football or hockey pitch enjoys attending gigs with his wife.
